Free agent Philip Dorsett was signed on Tuesday by the Seattle Seahawks. Looking for a 3rd receiver, Hawks management turned to the former Miami Hurricane to bring his 4.3 speed to Seattle. The goal was to supplement the passing game that currently sees stars in Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, and Greg Olsen.
“Seattle felt like the best opportunity to be the player I know I can be as a wide receiver,” he told ESPN’s Josina Anderson. “I spoke to Russell Wilson on FaceTime while he was working out. Shows you his work ethic. That got me extra excited. I think overall it’s just the right fit for me.”
The former New England Patriot saw a limited role last season when he caught 29 passes for 397 yards and 5 TDs. The 27 year old Dorsett will find a crowded WR room with the likes of John Ursua, Malik Turner, and David Moore. Presumably, Dorsett replaces Jaron Brown who is an unrestricted free agent.
Plagued with injuries and a lack of targets, it begs to wonder what value add Dorsett has that a draft pick or someone currently on the Seahawks roster can’t offer. With 124 catches and 1,634 yards over 5 years, Dorsett is a highly competent receiver. However, he doesn’t add any special teams snaps and has only once participated in over 50% of the offensive snaps in a season. While monday’s deal for Quinton Dunbar makes a lot of sense, this seems like a bit of a reach especially as defensive linemen and running backs are a much greater need.
