SSU Baseball Recap: Seattle Mariners 2, Houston Astros 3

4-30-15_PaxPerplexedJose Altuve hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning tonight to finish off the Mariner’s hopes. It was a tough pitcher’s duel all night between James Paxton and Astro’s starter Scott Feldman; both went 7 innings and left the game at a 2-2 tie. The tie would last until the 10th, when Altuve hit a single off the wall to end it.

Paxton was on target tonight, lasting 7 innings while striking out 7 and only allowing 2 runs. It was a welcome sight for Mariners fans after his poor start to the season.

Carson Smith pitched a scoreless 8th inning, bringing his numbers up to 18.1 consecutive scoreless innings to start his career!  Showing why some folks have him penciled in as a potential closer candidate moving into next season.

The Astros continued their fiery start and extended their streak to 7 wins. They’re looking like they will be around come September.

Winning Pitcher:

Losing Pitcher:

Dominic Leone – 1.1 IP, 2 Hs, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K (0-2)

SSU Player of the Game:

James Paxton – He’s had a rough start to the year, but tonight he showed he had put that behind him and really put together a quality start when the team needed it. They ultimately didn’t win, but with Pax putting it together, there’s a lot more good to come.

Next Side Up:

Roenis Elias takes the mound Friday night in game 2 of the series, making his 2nd spot start for Hisashi Iwakuma.  He’ll face Samuel Deduno of the Astros at 5 PM PST.
