Sounders winless, time to panic?

The Seattle Sounders dropped a home match to the Montreal Impact 1-0 and are now 0-3 on the season with zero goals to their name. If it weren’t for their 3rd straight game with a red card, the Sounders would have no significant stats to talk about at all. This is not good and the Rave Green sit at the bottom of the table in solitude.

The red card in question came in the 40th minute as the new Dutch back, Kelvin Leerdam was tossed for undercutting Montreal’s Daniel Lovitz. The official explanation was that there was that foul plus unnecessary slap by Kelvin warranted his dismissal. And even though the slap didn’t connect, it was still a dumb move set by a precedence last week.

Last week, Clint Dempsey made a bonehead play earning him a red card. Dempsey was waiting for a pass in penalty area when Dallas’ Jacori Hayes grabbed him. Dempsey retaliated and got slapped with the ejection. The playbook for opponents is to play rough with the Sounders and their hot-headedness will get them ejected–and so far it has worked.

The 2018 version of the Sounders look talented, but they seem to play without intelligence or chemistry. Coach Brian Schmetzer will have his work cut out for him to turn this ship around and if nothing else, it is good to see him take it seriously.

“Players make mistakes. But the mistakes have to stop happening. If the mistakes don’t stop happening, then guys don’t stay on the field.” –Brian Schmetzer

Strong words from the head man, we will see if it sinks in or if some starts end up sitting .
