Sounders shocked in 3-2 loss to Sporting KC

The Seattle Sounders lost a game they had no business losing Sunday. Kansas City’s Johnny Russell completed a hat trick to give the lowly Sporting KC a 3-2 win over the mighty Rave Green. The Sounders gravely overconfident were not paying attention to the old adage “on any given Sunday.”

KC had not won since March 30th and the Sounder obviously were too drunk off their success this season and overlooked this squad. Granted it was a road game, however, the Rave Green have the better talent and they did not prove it this Sunday afternoon.

Sporting (Johnny) KC would get two goals in the 1st half putting the Sounders in a hole.  Raul Ruidiaz would get a 63rd minute goal but Russel would immediately score again to put them down 3-1. The Sounders would press the attack again and again, and find a 71st minute goal by Kelvin Leerdam.  Unfortunately, Sporting would not relent on their defense and would take the victory and snap Seattle’s unbeaten streak at 6.

“I found a little bit of space that I haven’t been finding recently,” Russell said. “Teams have been making it difficult for me to find that space. For whatever reason, maybe a little change in formation with Yohan playing the false nine (and) dropping deeper, it gave me a little bit of space to exploit.”

KC would have 7 shots on target of which Stefan Frei would stop 4. It is becoming clear that the retirement of Chad Marshall this week could become a problem.
