It would take the Seattle Sounders 96 minutes to get the win, but with a Kelvin Leerdam goal in stoppage time, the roster ravaged Sounders squad defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0. MLS superstars Jordan Morris, Christian Roldan, Nico Lodiero, and Raul Ruidiaz were all out for international duty leaving a hodgepodge of role-player and future stars the task of piloting the ship.

The game saw the debut of Justin Dhillon, a call up from the Tacoma Defiance minor league squad. And 16 year old Sounder sensation Danny Leyva had a goal stolen from him by the referee as a phantom foul was called on the Sounders on the Whitecaps goalie.

The Sounders took a ton of shots—to the tune of 24 attempts with 8 on target. Vancouver’s goalie Zach McMath had 7 saves but couldn’t stop the eponymous goal in the 96th ruining an otherwise stellar performance.

The Sounders now stand 29 points and firmly in 3rd place in the Western Conference. A victim of their own success they continue to tread water awaiting the return of their star players hoping to get thru a rugged road schedule that includes a Wednesday match-up vs NYFC followed 3 days later to Columbus. We can expect our stars to still be out for those games and if the Rave Green can manage a couple of draws—that is all we can hope for as the Gold Cup has taken our best players from us.
