The Seattle Sounders fell victim again to their own success as they were blown out against a solid New York FC squad as the Rave Green’s second team just could not keep up, losing 3-0. Starters GK Stefan Frei, M Jovein Jones, and D Kim Kee-Hee were the only starting 11 to play on the pitch as the remaining starters were all on international assignments.
In the 1st half, the Sounders had a chance to get ahead with a Kee-Hee header off a free kick; however, a ruling that Justin Dhillion was offside negated that chance. The next best chance came in the 32nd minute when Harry Shipp fed Nouhou a neat pass but a kick save from the NYFC goalie Stuver swatted away the attack.
The 2nd half was all NYFC as they knocked 3 goals out of 8 on target. The makeshift Sounder defense was no match for NYFC who took 20 shots on goal, giving Frei far too much to stop than reasonably possible. Without the possibility of a counter-attack, the LAFC attack pinned their ears back and kept attacking.
Without Nico Lodiero, Raul Ruidiaz, Christian Roldan, Jordan Morris and others, the Sounders were no match for the deeper NYFC. The Sounders have lost 4 of their last 5 without the squad that got them to the hot start in first 3 months of play. Seattle will play Saturday again without many of their starters and will try desperately to hold on to their 3d place standing in the MLS West.
