Sounders drop expansion FC Cincinnati 4-1 in MLS opener

Posted by

The newly minted FC Cincinnati came to Seattle for their MLS debut. Bringing several hundred rabid fans in tow to Centurylink, the Lions looked to get the drop on Rave Green. While the desire and enthusiasm was there, the vast disparity in skill was on display as the Sounders showed that they are the powerhouse that steamrolled the MLS in the 2nd half of the 2018 season dropping Cincy 4-1.

FC Cincinnati were the darlings of the USL drawing 25K + fans—more than the average of most of the teams in the MLS. A promotion to the MLS was just a matter of time for the much beloved team and it started with a bang as Leonardo Bertone scored their 1st goal of the MLS.

The cheers from the visiting side wouldn’t last long as the Sounders would score 3 goals before the half would end. A Nicolas Lodiero cross to Kelvin Leerdam would give the fullback his 1st of the season. While striker Jordan Morris would score a brace announcing his strong return from injury in a spectacular fashion.

Morris’ return elated fans and teammates alike as he showed a newfound ability with an explosive (left-footed) strike that is assuredly a portent of good things to come. Last year’s ACL tear robbed Morris of the 2018 season. But the 24 year old paired with forward Raul Ruidiaz (who also scored a goal) gave a strong pairing that should put the MLS on notice that the road to the MLS Cup comes through Centurylink.

As exciting as the game was for the fledgling Cincinnati fans, the tone was somber for the Sounders fans and players. Before the game, the Sounders honored their 1st head coach Sigi Schmid. Sigi’s wife Valerie was awarded a Golden Scarf by Sounders FC Owner Adrian Hanauer in front of 40k tearful fans, friends, and former players.

⦁ The Sounders are now 5-2-3 all time in their 1st match against expansion teams.
⦁ The Sounders have also not allowed any more than 1 goal in all 10 of it’s home openers.
⦁ Morris scored the 2nd brace of his career.
⦁ Stefan Frei made 2 saves to earn his 100th career MLS regular season victory.
⦁ Ruidiaz scored his 11th MLS goal in just 15 appearances.
⦁ Lodeiro had his 8th multi assist game of his career. He leads the MLS with 38 regular season assists since he came to the team in July 2016.
