Sounders cruise to 3-0 win over Rapids, take a #2 seed in the MLS playoffs

The Seattle Sounders have never missed the MLS playoffs in their 9 season history and this year hasn’t been any different. With a 3-0 win over the Colorado Rapids, Seattle have #2 seed in the Western Conference and thus earn a bye in the 1st round.

Will Bruin sparked the onslaught with a goal in the 9th minute, his 11th goal on the season. Acquired this season, Bruin was considered a backup to forwards Jordan Morris and Clint Dempsey, but here down the stretch he has come up big in Morris’ absence (due to injury). Bruin had a great career at Houston for they Dynamos, but had missed the playoffs these last couple seasons.

“That’s exactly why I came here,” Bruin said. “For me personally, it feels good to get back in. I think it’s clicking pretty well right now. Everybody knows their roles and knows where they need to be. . The goals will take care of themselves.”

Bruin will be counted on to help on as Clint Dempsey would gather a red card. In the 24th minute Dempsey would get sent off for an elbow to Rapids defender Mike da Fonte.  While the Sounders would go on to win big, Clint will not be available for the next game due to the red card. Coach Brian Schmetzer wasn’t too happy.

“I’ll watch the tape, I’ll sit down with Clint and figure out his version, and we will proceed,” he said. “I’m not allowing one play to derail what we can accomplish. That won’t happen.”

The Sounders actually tied the Portland Timbers in points this season, however, they lose the conference title based on win total.  Schmetzer and the Sounders did not seem to have too many problems with that.

“The mood in (the locker room) right now is we’re going to enjoy this moment,” he said. “There wasn’t any moment where the players went, ‘Whew, I’m glad that’s over.’ They’re already looking forward to the next game.”
