Sounder drop rivalry game 2-3 to Timbers as season spirals out of control

The Seattle Sounders should have caught a lucky break on Saturday as both Fanendo Adi and Sebastian Blanco were sidelined with injuries. Unfortunately, center back Larrys Mabiala, earned a brace with 2 goals in the second half. The woebegone Sounders squad could not stop a faster and bigger squad in the Portland Timbers losing 3-2.

Seattle’s goalie Bryan Meredith would do a standup job in the 1st half with his best Stefan Frei impression. Problems would mount as 16 shots by Portland would eventually catch up to him.  The Timbers would play a physical game putting the Sounders on their heels for most of the match. The Sounders would attack at a plodding pace holding the advantage of time of possession, but it would be the Timbers back line that constantly intercepted passes on their half of the pitch turning them into opportunities.

Victor Rodriguez and Chad Marshall would get goals on the Sounders 10 opportunities, but the 74th minute goal by Larrys Mabiala would seal the deal. A frustrated Rave Green squad would get 3 yellow cards in the closing minutes as the frustration of a derailed season surfaced. With just 12 points on the season, the Sounders need a miracle to make a playoff run.
