Silvertips Matt Fonteyne singed to an AHL contract
Everett Silvertips star forward Matt Fonteyne was signed Monday to a contract with the San Jose Barracuda. The Barracuda are an affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, and Fonteyne could potentially make his giant leap forward to realizing his NHL dreams.
The Alberta native has appeared in 340 games over the last several years with the Silvertips and seen 82 goals with 126 assists. While bigger names like Patrick Bajkov and Carter Hart make the headlines, Fonteyne has been he glue that has held the team together.
“I wasn’t really expecting it, I just came into the year just wanting to… have a really good season team-wise and see how far we can go,” Fonteyne said. “And then when (the contract) came up, I think it goes to show that whenever a team does well, individuals are going to have success as well.”
The 5’11 180lb forward has helped the Tips advance to the 2nd round of the WHL playoffs after putting down their arch rivals the Seattle Thunderbirds. He is now in mortal conflict with the Portland Winterhawks and will be allowed to see the WHL playoffs thru completions–hopefully a Memorial Cup for the hometown Everett Sivlertips.
The promotion is a well deserved honor for a player who has grown up in the game and given the Everett fans the last 5 years of his formative years. We all wish him the best and cherish these next several games he plays here.
If the name is familiar, he’s the grandson of former LW Val Fonteyne, who played for @DetroitRedWings @NYRangers @penguins and @EdmontonOilers from 1959-74. Both are from Wetaskiwin, Alberta, which is between Edmonton & Red Deer. https://t.co/IqCWuCKgjB
