Seattle Mariners: Hisashi Iwakuma to 15-day DL with Strained Lat Muscle

hisashi iwakumaHisashi Iwakuma was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Friday with a right lat strain, leaving a hole in Seattle’s rotation.

The injury is a surprise to fans; however, team officials had suspected injury from the 34 year old starter since last Monday.

Mariners GM set the 15 day DL effective back to Monday April 21st after coaches noticed that Iwakuma was pitching with some discomfort.

“(We) felt it best to back him off and put him on the DL to give him time to make sure this thing, it’s a long season we don’t want this thing to be an aggravated issue as we go through the next 5 1/2 months,” Zduriencik said. “We’ll know a little more tonight. At this point we’re hoping it’s nothing more than shoulder fatigue and something very small.”

The Mariners recalled Lucas Lutge to replace Iwakuma in the interim.  The 6’4, 28 year old brings a career 4.47 ERA in 86 major league innings to the roster.   At Triple A Tacoma, Lutge has given up 3 runs in 8 innings with 6 strikeouts.
