Nelson Cruz

Position: DH/OF Bats: Right   Throws: Right

Biography:

Nelson Cruz is, of course, our big free agent signing for this year.  He just inked a 4 year, $57 million contract to DH for us.  He was born in 1980 in the beautiful town of Las Matas de Santa Cruz, Dominican Republic.  His parents are both college professors.   He was originally recruited and signed into the Mets organization.  Then in the minors he played in Oakland and Milwaukee’s system before being called up.  He was traded to Texas in 2006 and played there until 2013.

He had many productive seasons in Texas, including all-star selections in 2009, 2013, and 2014.  He served a 50 game suspension for PED’s at the end of 2013 related to the Balco scandal.  At the end of which he signed a one year contract with Baltimore, where he put up the eye popping numbers below:

Last Year:

159 Games played: .271 Avg, 40 HR’s, 108 RBI’s, 4 SB

SSU Projection:

Expect a bit of a drop off just due to the Safeco effect, but not a huge one.  The guy hits a ton:

158 Games played, .275 Avg, 34 HR’s, 105 RBI’s

Random Fact/Quote:

He got his nickname, “Boom Stick” from a video game ad.
