Seattle Mariners: Getting to Know Logan Morrison

Logan Morrison

First Base

Logan Morrison (LoMo), is a 27 year old 1st basemen (formerly played Right Field).   A former 1st round draft pick (#20) for the Miami Marlins, LoMo was a hot prospect ranked #2 in the Marlins farm system.

Injuries have slowed LoMo’s progress every season in the big leagues since 2001.

Logan Morrison has shown flashes of brilliance; however, his constant injury history and his move from the outfield to 1st base seems to indicate that the Mariners wish to minimize his propensity for injury.

Last Year:

AVG         HR         RBI

.262         11         38

SSU Projection:

I look for LoMo to hit .250, 12 hr, and 40 RBI in an injury shortened season.   There should be a move to supplant him by August with another player:

  • Worst case scenario: Willie Bloomquist or Nelson Cruz act as a stop-gap at 1st base and the Mariners are sent scrambling to find a replacement.
  • Best case scenario: former scrap-heap resident Jesus Montero, now 60 pounds lighter, lights up spring training and impresses the coaches by taking baseball seriously.  LoMo moves into a complimentary bench reserve for 1b/RF/DH
    • Alternatively,  D.J. Petersen wows everyone in Spring Training and at Tacoma and comes up as a midseason call up replacing LoMo.

Random Fact/Quote:

A social media star, LoMo is known for this slightly R-Rated posts online. Near and dear to his heart is advocating Lung Cancer awareness (his father died of lung cancer). Morrison has raised over $300,000 for the American Lung Association.
