Tuesday, March 31st, the Seattle Mariners trade Erasmo Ramirez to the Tampa Rays for left-handed Pitcher Mike Montgomery.

Ramirez was given an opportunity to challenge for a starting roster spot in Spring Training.  He was however, edged by a strong showing by Taijuan Walker and off season free agent, JA Happ.

Having run out of options, the Mariners would have lost Erasmo to a waiver claim.  Rather than risking losing him for nothing, the Mariners traded for the 25 year old Triple A player.

Montgomery, is a 2008 draft pick who has yet to be called up to the majors; he finished Triple A with a  4.29 ERA in 25 starts.

Mike Montgomery Spring Training stats:

  • 11.1 innings
  • 3 earned runs
  • 9 strikeouts
  • 2 walks
