Opening day is finally here; the promise and excitement of a new baseball season has many pundits speculating about the Mariners as a World Series candidate. There’s a lot of baseball before that is decided, but there hasn’t been this much credible positivity about the Ms in over a decade. With a matchup against what should be Seattle’s biggest obstacle in the AL West, we’ll quickly see how this impressively balanced team on paper does against the Angels.

This series will feature lots of premier individual matchups. King Felix against Mike Trout will be the highlight, but there is plenty of star power on both sides. The Angels will be trotting out some established veteran pitchers of their own, so the Ms faithful will be rooting for some consistent offense outside of the potentially formidable Cano, Cruz, and Seager section of the lineup.

Robinson Cano.

Watch for the All-Star 2nd Baseman to have a big series. Cano has traditionally started off the season hitting well (.300 average in April), and with Nelson Cruz hitting behind him, Cano should expect to see a more appealing pitch selection. Robbie has also battered Jered Weaver throughout his career (.375 BA).

Friday, April 10th    at Oakland Athletics        7:10 PM PST
J.A. Happ(LHP) 0-0 vs. Drew Pomeranz (LHP) 0-0

Saturday, April 11th    at Oakland Athletics        6:10 PM PST
Taijuan Walker (RHP) 0-0 vs. Sonny Gray (RHP) 0-0

Sunday, April 12th    at Oakland Athletics        1:10 PM PST
Felix Hernandez (RHP) 0-0 vs. Jesse Hahn (LHP) 0-0

The Mariners take the show on the road and travel down to the Bay Area to take on the Oakland Moneyballers. After another year of trading away the best players on the team, Oakland has a roster full of solid role players, some legit pitching talent, and a lot of questions. In true Billy Beane fashion, the As aren’t impressive on paper, but don’t be surprised if they win 90 games.

Taijuan Walker. The young prospect makes his 2014 debut on the road, but it doesn’t matter as he leaves the As looking frustrated and toothless. Mariner fans start wondering if Walker can beat out King Felix for the Cy Young. Slow down overly optimistic Ms fans, it will be just one start, but expect Walker to make an early impression.
