Redhawks Roundball Roundup: Seattle U drops 3rd in a row

This week saw the Seattle University Redhawks (12-14, 4-7) drop two games, and their 3rd in a row as they plummet in the standings of the WAC. The games this week were winnable, but bad luck and lack of an inside presence were the undoing of the Redhawks.

Each game saw their ebbs and flows, but finishing the games were the undoing of the Redhawks. While defensively they were on their game, they found their problems on the boards as they were out-rebounded in both games.

Vs Grand Canyon State, L 61-58

The Redhawks stopped the Antelopes (18-9, 7-3) for much of the game. The Redhawks jumped out to a 24-9 lead on GCU on the shoulders of Zack Moore (17 points) and Brendan Westendorf (14 points). But GCU’s DeWayne Russell scored 11 points down the stretch including a pivotal jumper on Thursday night to win the game.

Vs Cal State Bakersfield, L 51-48

WAC leaders, the Cal State Bakersfield (19-7, 10-1) edged out the Redhawks, after the Roadrunners Moataz Aly made a tie-breaking layup with 20 seconds left. Seattle U’s defense held CSB at bay for the majority of the game holding the visitors to 32% from the field, but ultimately would come up short as they would suffer their 5th straight loss.

Matej Kavas had 11 points and Powell scored 10 with eight rebounds for the Redhawks. But again rebounds were an issue as the Roadrunners out-rebounded Seattle 47-36, including 15-3 on the offensive glass.

SSU Player of the Week

Senior forward, William Powell had two great games scoring 23 points over 2 games. He was also the lone force with 14 rebounds as well. While a best on the boards, he did not get much help as the swarms of big men form the opposition proved too much for the Redhawks.
