Seattle Mariners: Getting to Know Seth Smith

MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres

Seth Smith

Position:

Right Field

Biography:

32 year old outfielder out of Jackson Mississippi, Seth Smith played college ball at Ole Miss. Played for the Colorado Rockies from 2007-2011, Smith was a solid contributor during the Rockies playoff run in the 2007 NDLS. A solid grade of A as an athlete, Seth Smith often uses pure athleticism to speed around the base paths to keep games in motion.

Seth Smith bounced around from the Rockies to the Athletics, then the Padres, until he was brought in to the Mariners this past offseason.

Last Year:

AVG         HR         RBI

.266         12         48

SSU Projection:

Seth Smith is a solid veteran player.   He will never hit for average or power, however, he is scrappy and will never fall into ruts. He stays out of cold streaks that hurt the team. Smith is expected to platoon with newly acquired Justin Ruggiano in Right Field.

My projection is that he overtakes Ruggiano as the permanent Right Field. Smith’s last year stats at Petco Park should translate with some semblance of equivalency. Look for him to bat in the bottom 3rd of the lineup with the following stats:

.260 AVG, 15 HR, 50 RBI

Random Fact/Quote:

Seth Smith was the backup Quarterback for 2x Super Bowl Champion Eli Manning at Ole Miss University.
