I would advise everyone not to read too much into Felix Hernandez recent bout on the 10 day DL. Citing a sore back, the Seattle Mariners are using the upcoming All-Star game to give the King a mini-vacation.
While it is true that the 32-year-old may miss a start or two, this is deemed a luxury as the Mariners have plenty of options on Triple A players. Additionally, since no Mariner starters are on the All-Star game there is no danger nor sense in burning any of them.
Hernandez has seen the injured list a couple of times in the last couple of years, but this sounds like an excuse to refresh the 6 time All-Star. This season, the King has an 8-7 record and a 5.13 ERA in 19 starts. His ERA is the highest of his career.
“We’re playing for the long haul,” Mariners manager Scott Servais told reporters Tuesday afternoon. “I think when we started coming into the season we thought if we got 28-30 starts that would be a great year for Felix. We’re ahead of pace for that. This is as much allowing it to calm down as well as hopefully rejuvenating him here getting into the second half.”
