This game marks the second clash between Oregon State’s Gary Payton II and Washington’s Shawn Kemp Jr.–former sons of the Supersonic NBA All-Stars:
A crazed crowd of 9,000+ fans filled Gill Arena to watch the Beavers win their 14th straight at home. The pressure of the situation and a stifling defense translated to an inability by the Huskies to score for the first 6 minutes. The first points for the Huskies came from Shawn Kemp Jr. who scored on his second of two free throws.
The Huskies took the 1st game back on their own home turf (Alaska Airlines Arena) on January 15th; but, rampant turnovers created scoring opportunities which the Beavers excelled at converting.
Andrew Andrews was his normal consistant self, leading the team in most statistical categories. However, as is the broken record that has kept playing in the last 3 weeks, the loss of Brian Upshaw (expelled from the team), has seen a formerly potent inside defensive game go soft.
Not much, but, the Huskies did protect the perimeter well, only giving up one 3-point shot. The Huskies also out-rebounded the Beavers 32-24.
What didn’t work
Defensively, the Huskies were unable to stop Oregon State. The Beavers field goal percentage was an unacceptable .511 (hitting 23-45).
The Huskies shot poorly from the field hitting .357 of their goals.
SSU Player of the week
- Andrew Andrews had 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals.
