Had there been a discussion before the weekend that the Washington Huskies would earn a split with the Oregon schools, most would find that an acceptable and predictable result. However, after a beat down of the Oregon State Beavers and an overtime effort against Oregon, many Dawg fans felt there should have been a better result. Isaiah Stewart was his usual amazing self with 38 points and 24 rebounds but it was evident that he will need more help from his teammates when it comes time to face the elite teams in the Pac 12.
Vs Oregon State W 64-56
The Huskies rolled to an easy victory as the had a complete team effort. Shooting 50% from the field, the Dawgs had 5 players in double digits. Isaiah Stewart led the way with 13 points on 6-9 shooting. Marcus Tshonis, Jamal Bey, and Raquan Battle all scored 11 and Najah Carter added 10.
The Beavers actually had the rebound advantage with 36-26, but as a team they could only hit 39% of their shots. A relatively mistake free day by the Huskies—just 15 fouls—led to an auto pilot win that saw what the Huskies are capable when they minimize errors.
Vs Oregon L 64-61
Jaden McDaniels was back in the lineup afer missing the Beavers game, but it would turn the tide as Oregon’s Payton Pritchard hit his 6th 3 pointer of the game with just 3 seconds left on the clock, in overtime, to win the game. McDaniels would go just 1-9 from the field and finish with 5 points.
As rusty as McDaniels was, freshman Isaiah Stewart had a banner day with 25 points and 19 reboutnds. The Huskies held a 16 point lead at one point and were up 37-25 at one point .But a miserable second half saw the Dawgs score just 24 points in the 2nd half and overtime combined.
“It was like he was going to will us to the game,” Washington coach Mike Hopkins said of Stewart. “He’s just special. … I wish we could have got that one for him today.”
The Huskies got a great effort from the bench by guard Marcus Tsohonis. The freshman form Portland, Or would have his best game in Purple and Gold with 14 points in 36 minutes. Unfortunately for the Huskies, Tsohonis would be the only other Husky with double digit points. Th Huskies would have 11 blocks on the day but, Oregon would just have 8 turnovers as and grind out the victory.
