Seattle Mariners: Getting to Know Willie Bloomquist

Shortstop / Utility Player

Nick named “Big News.” Willie is in his second tenure with the Mariners, after starting his career in Seattle in 2002. Local product of Port Orchard and South Kitsap High School, was drafted twice by his home state’s team (1996, didn’t sign; 1999 signed). Besides Seattle, he has also played for the Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks. He carries a respectable bat but is known more for his defensive versatility, last year having played every position except for center field, catcher and pitcher.

Last Year:

47 Games played: .278 AVG, 1 HR, 14 RBI, 1 SB

SSU Projection:

80 Games played: .295 AVG, 2 HR, 23 RBI, 15 SB

Falls just short of recapturing his batting magic from his first two years with Arizona while keeping the infield fresh.

Random Fact/Quote:

A family man who loves hunting, fishing and Jesus, Willie is also a fan of social media, a highly recommended and active follow on Twitter.
