Get the brooms out baby, the Mariners sweep the Tampa Rays!

If it wasn’t catcher Mike Zunino’s grand salami home run or the impressive starting pitching by relative unknowns, then it must have been the camaraderie of a team that has been beaten down, battered, and bruised that saw the Seattle Mariners sweep the Tampa Rays in a 3 game set.

Zunino the powerhouse

It is a full 24 hour later but we are still talking about the Mike Zunino moon-shot that almost left Safeco Field on Saturday night. The grand slam—one of an MLB record 7, hit on Saturday—has shown that perhaps the M’s catcher has proven his worth.

Zunino was sent down to Triple – A Tacoma in an ignominious fashion, however, he has been on fire these last two series.  He has outright terrified opposing pitcher  with solid at bats that have manifested in outstanding results. If the M’s can get a modicum of results out of the position that had been a vacuum, we could see brilliant results like this 6-7 record.

Scott Servais mentioned that when the back of the lineup produces, that is when a team really takes hold. Over the past eight games, that part of the lineup has hit .424 with 25 runs, 10 doubles, five home runs and 34 RBI.

“When that happens,” Servais said, the offense is “really dangerous.”

SSU Player of the Series

Sam Gaviglio and Chris Bergman had great outings with their starts; however, starting pitcher Ariel Miranda went a full 9 innings for the 1st time in his career and pitched a brilliant 9 strikeout, 1 run game for the win. This is the 5th straight brilliant outing by Miranda. The Cuban national now has a record of 5-2 has been a stabilizing force of a rotation that has been devastated by injury.

“We wouldn’t be a in good spot,” Servaias said, “without Ariel Miranda.”
