Coming off of a very frustrating and galling loss last Saturday to Sporting KC due to 3 bad decisions by the referee. Regardless, your preview for tonight’s match versus the visiting Dallas Burn, er… FC Dallas is here. As always I will be your guide to football, futbol, soccer this weekend.
Dallas visits Seattle as a somewhat enigmatic side. They have been up and down so far this year. After a very hot start they have slowed the pace somewhat in the last few weeks. Dallas currently is in 5th place in the MLS Western Conference standings with 22 points, 4 points behind Seattle. While Seattle has the best goal differential in MLS (goals scored less goals allowed) with +9(20 GF, 11 GA), Dallas is mediocre with -1 (18 GF, 19 GA). This is a mismatch…except that it isn’t. Seattle is going into a tough stretch of 2 matches in 4 days and while Dallas is too, they don’t have to play Portland Timbers FC on Tuesday.
Last match between these teams had 0 shots on target for the first time in MLS history. Don’t expect that to be repeated. Expect the Sounders to never team Lamar Neagle and Chad Barrett together at forward again. Neither has the necessary individual creativity to operate up top without a partner or wing to support them.
Seattle– Marco Papa (Guatamala)
Dallas– Tesho Akindele (Canada), Je-Vaughn Watson (Jamaica), Atiba Harris (St. Kitts and Nevis), Moises Hernandez (Guatamala), Kellyn Acosta (US U-20)
Seattle- Goalkeeper- Stefan Frei
Defenders- Leonardo Gonzales, Chad Marshall, Zach Scott, Tyrone Mears
Midfielders- Andy Rose, Gonzalo Pineda, Michael Azira, Christian Roldan
Forwards- Clint Dempsey, Obafemi Martins or Lamar Neagle or Darwin Jones (a bit of hedging on my part I know, so sue me).
Dallas- Goalkeeper- Dan Kennedy
Defenders- Michel, Walker Zimmerman, Matt Hedges, Zach Loyd
Midfielders- Victor Ulloa, Kyle Beker(not Man), Mauro Diaz
Wing Forwards-Fabian Castillo, Ryan Hollingshead
Center Forward (striker)- David Texeira
Player to watch Dallas
Victor Ulloa is the FCD defensive midfielder. Look for him to start Dallas’ attack. So far this season he has played every minute. Also he has played 90 minutes in every match for FCD since May of 2014 except for one. This ironman will mark Gonzalo Pineda for much of the match. Look for him to try to protect the depleted Dallas back line.
Player to watch Seattle
Chad Marshall keys the Seattle defense vs. a trio of dynamic attackers who will come at him from all directions. Look for him to organize the Rave Green defense, and make sure that Blas Perez, Mauro Diaz and Fabian Castillo are held in check. Look for a big game from Marshall. He may be joined by Brad Evans later in the match, but due to Evans playing on Wednesday for the US National team’s victory vs. Germany, don’t expect Evans to start.
Expect both teams to play defensively–Seattle due to not having all of their starters, and Dallas due to fear of the Seattle counterattack–and try to counter and possess. I would not expect much offense in this one folks. I would expect both coaches to tell there players to hold back. Unfortunately for the Rave Green faithful it will be a 1-1 draw.
