Seattle Sounder great Osvoldo Alonso returned to the city where he made a name for himself but this time with his new team Minnesota United. While there was celebration for his homecoming, the Sounders got down to business and took out the Seattle legend with a 1-0 win that secured 2nd place in the MLS playoffs.

The game would feature the return of defender Roman Torres who came off a 10 game suspension for PED use. Torres would make it memorable with a 29th minute goal and participating in the clean sheet victory. In that 29th minute, MF Nico Lodiero would fire a corner kick off the left wing side that found Joevin Jones who returned a cross into the box that found the noggin of Torres. The resulting header knocked the ball to the turf and past the Loons goalkeeper Vito Nannone.

“I was very happy to be able to score and very happy to be back with the team,” Torres said through an interpreter. “It is very hard to be out of playing for 10 games. But this is a demonstration that during that time that I wasn’t able to play, I was preparing myself and keeping myself in good shape. After those 10 games, I able to come back and play and make this very beautiful goal.”

The win now puts the Sounders against the 7th place FC Dallas in the new MLS playoff format. The expanded playoffs now see the Sounders host a knockout round game rather than an aggregate series. That playoff game will be at 12:30 on October 12th.
