Frei records 50th MLS shut out while Sounders down hated rival Portland Timbers, 1-0

Before 47,362 fans at CenturyLink field, goalkeeper Stefan Frei made 4 saves against the Cascadian Rival Portland Timbers to help earn the Seattle Sounders a 1-0 victory. The shutout would be Frei’s 50 in his MLS career and sent the Timber tumbling to their 5th consecutive winless game.

Just a week away from his 22nd birthday, midfielder Christian Roldan scored a header in the 4th minute off a corner from Chad Marshall. The former UW Husky has two of his 5 MLS goals logged against the Timbers.

“I think [Roldan’s fiery side] has been hidden because nobody’s talked about it because I’ve always said he’s a nice kid,” said head coach Brian Schmetzer. “I’m sure he’s taken a few cues from Ozzie over the years, and as Cristian develops, that’s just another part of his learning curve. He’s always searching to find different ways to impact the game.”

The Portland Timbers would find their attacks stymied time after time as their 19 shots were blocked 7 times by a staunch Sounder defense. The Timbers came full force but were ultimately stonewalled by the backline of Marshall, Brad Evans, Joevin Jones, and Gustav Svensson. The reintroduction of the captain Brad Evans has especially rejuvenated this team’s defense.
